Otis Bigelow Young was born in Dodge Center, Minnesota, in 1899 and came to Southern Illinois University as a professor of physics in 1929. In 1938 Professor Young became the chairman of the Physics Department. In 1939, Young was appointed chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Administration Program at Southern Illinois University, a program designed to train pilots in case of general war mobilization.
